Wichita, Kansas News, Weather, Sports – Cyber security focus at WSU, Friends

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) –

A forum in Wichita Wednesday is focusing on cyber security – a topic some colleges see as a growing opportunity for education.

The day-long free forum at Wichita State University’s Hughes Metropolitan Complex will emphasize how to make sure businesses stay safe for digital attacks. Yet the topics also include “Drone Wars” and “Wearables.” The Small Business Administration is helping to put on the forum.

Across town, Friends University unveiled its own cyber school Tuesday. Organizers say the new training systems allow students to see cyber-attacks in real time. It also allows them to respond to malware or ransom attacks quickly and safely.

Program Director Jonathan Lanning said there’s a growing need for more security professionals. “It’s not just about adults doing this,” he explained. “It’s not enough, because if we don’t start preparing the next generation and getting them educated the right way, they’re not going to be able to meet our needs as an organization, or in the community, the government, et cetera.”

Friends believes the only other school that rivals its cyber program is Texas A&M.

Cyber security issues have made major headlines in recent weeks. On Tuesday, Yahoo admitted a 2013 data breach affected all three billion of its accounts. That’s three times worse than first thought. In Kansas, a ransomware attack paralyzed Butler County government computers for several days in September.
